Packers look to sweep the Lions and get win #10 on the season
The Packers make their annual visit to Ford Field to take on the Detroit Lions at 3:25 pm Central Time on Sunday afternoon.
The Packers are 9-3 after their 30-16 home win vs the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday while the Lions are 5-7 but got a victory last Sunday, a 34-30 comeback win over the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
Matthew Stafford has his good moments and sometimes not so much, but he is a competitor when he is out there. Adrian Peterson still has a nose for the endzone. Kenny Golladay has been injured for much of the season, but they have players who are capable of having huge games in Marvin Jones Jr. and Danny Amendola. The Packers did a lot of good things on defense the last few weeks, although the opposing offenses they faced weren’t very good. They need to build on what they did well and have a decent showing once again on Sunday.
Aaron Rodgers seems to hit a new milestone every game he plays lately. Davante Adams continues to find the endzone and put up impressive stats of his own. The running game, led by Aaron Jones, needs to get going early. That will open up the passing game and they can attack this defense from every direction. They are playing on a fast track indoors. This is where the offense is usually at its best. Let’s keep it that way on Sunday.
The special teams need to be better for the Packers moving forward. Mason Crosby missed an extra point in each of the last two games and the Packers gave up a punt return for a touchdown last week and the second time this season. Mistakes like that can lose playoff games. They need to correct that right now.
The Lions are 1-0 since they fired Head Coach Matt Patricia and replaced him with Darrell Bevell. Bevell has seen the Packers a lot, having been an assistant coach for them at one point and an opposing coach on the staffs of the Minnesota Vikings and the Seattle Seahawks. Sometimes the fact that someone in the organization is familiar with an opponent can be overrated. The Packers did win 42-21 over the Lions in Week 2. Still, the Packers can’t take this game (or any other game) lightly.
The Packers got their 100th victory over the Bears a few weeks ago, but they already have over 100 victories vs the Lions already. The Packers lead the all-time series 103-72-7. Since 1932, the Packers and Lions have met at least once a season, making it the longest continually-running matchup in the NFL. The Packers and Bears did not play in 1982, a season in which many games were lost due to a strike.
A series of events like the New York Giants defeating the Seattle Seahawks on the road last week put the Packers in a good position. They are currently the #2 seed in the NFC. They need to keep on winning and perhaps the New Orleans Saints can lose at some point to give the Packers the #1 seed once again. Right now, all they can control is what they can do, and what they need to focus on right now is getting a win on Sunday.
The Packers need to stay focused and play a full 60 minutes. In Week 2, the Packers fell behind 14-3 before their offense came alive. They took a 17-14 lead into halftime. Aaron Jones broke free for a 75-yard touchdown in the third quarter. They were then on their way to a 42-21 victory and a 2-0 start to the season. Let’s dominate early this time and let’s dominate late and also in between. Let’s get another great win and keep moving on from there. Wherever you are, let’s cheer the team to victory on Sunday.
Go Pack Go!
