Packers at Cowboys left fans fit to be tied Sunday night
The Packers and Cowboys played to a 40-40 tie on Sunday night.
The Cowboys won the toss and deferred until the 2nd half. The Packers went down the field and Jordan Love found Romeo Doubs in the endzone for a quick 7-0 lead. The two scored again in the 2nd quarter, but Brandon McManus had his XP attempt blocked and returned for 2 points. Two touchdowns by the Cowboys, the latter coming after Jordan Love fumbled, gave the Cowboys a 16-13 lead at halftime. After the Packers forced the Cowboys to punt to start the 2nd half, they took the lead. The teams traded touchdowns and leads the rest of the half until McManus made a field goal to send the game to overtime tied 37-37. The Packers won the toss, and with these new OT rules, they chose to kickoff to start the extra frame. The Cowboys kicked a short FG and the Packers answered it with a FG of their own as time expired.
Thoughts about this tie:
The Packers last played to a tie in 2018, a 29-29 tie at home vs the Minnesota Vikings, while the Cowboys last tie was in 1969, a 24-24 tie at the Cotton Bowl vs the San Francisco 49ers. The only time a tie game finished with a higher score was when the Oakland Raiders and the Boston Patriots played to a 43-43 tie at Fenway Park in 1964.
The Packers did a lot of things well, but there were too many mistakes. McManus had an XP blocked after having a FG blocked last week at Cleveland. This needs to get corrected. I see kicks are getting blocked across the league in bunches, but this one was costly. It was a 3-point swing in the game.
The defense was a huge disappointment too, especially in the 2nd half. Dak Prescott had too much time to throw sometimes, and the defensive backs were giving the receivers too much cushion as well. This will need to change if the Packers are going to make any kind of a run this season. They also did not have a takeaway in the game.
The offense scored 40 points, but it wasn’t without mistakes either. Jordan Love had another costly turnover as his fumble before halftime cost them the lead. They moved the ball well in OT, but they took way too much time getting that final play off before the FG attempt. Only 1 second remained on the clock before McManus came in to give the Packers the tie. They almost allowed the clock to run out, which would have given the Packers the loss and an inability to even try the FG.
It’s too bad a game like this has to end in a tie, especially on a night when Micah Parsons made his return to AT&T Stadium. It was his sack of Prescott in OT that kept the Cowboys out of the endzone though. The Packers have still not lost at that stadium, but it would be the first time they left without a victory.
The Packers now have a bye week before they host the Cincinnati Bengals on October 12th, and with the way they have been playing the last 2 weeks, they could use a week off. Hopefully they can rest some injuries and work on their problems. Take care Packer fans!
