Packers look for huge victory over Lions in their season opener
The Green Bay Packers open up their 2025-26 regular season with a Week 1 matchup with the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field late Sunday afternoon.
The Packers finished last season 11-6 and were defeated in the Wild-Card Round 22-10 by the eventual Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. The Lions went 15-2, only to lose at home 45-31 to the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round.
The Lions have quite an offense led by QB Jared Goff. They also have a head coach who routinely goes for it on 4th down. This offense is never stopped until it is off the field. Micah Parsons was acquired to make a huge impact on defense, but he is listed as questionable. With or without Parsons, the Packers need to generate pressure on the QB and get some turnovers.
Jordan Love had thumb surgery during the preseason, but he insists he will be ready to go. It will be exciting to see what rookie WR Matthew Golden can bring to the offense. This is an offense that can score a lot of points, and the Packers need to take advantage of their scoring opportunities. Field goals and empty possessions probably won’t get it done vs Detroit.
The Lions have won 4 of the last 5 games between the teams. The Packers need to change that. They also need to do better within the division. They went 1-5 last year vs NFC North opponents. If they want to take that next step, winning games like this one is important.
Amon-Ra St. Brown is a very talented receiver for Detroit. He has also angered many Packer fans with his antics. That caused a lot of fans to crack a smile when Detroit was eliminated by Washington in the playoffs last January. It will be important to keep him from having a big game.
For the first time since Matt LaFleur became the head coach, the Packers open their season at home. This game will be far from a cakewalk, but it’s a new season and the Packers are poised to take that next step and become one of the best teams in the NFC and the NFL as a whole.
Let’s get out to an early lead and not look back. If you are going to the game, have a great time and cheer loudly for the team. Let’s start the season with a huge victory vs a divisional opponent and keep going from there!
