Packers get off to a winning start as they tame the Lions
The Packers started out their season with a victory as they defeated the Detroit Lions 27-13 at Lambeau Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Packers got the ball first as Detroit deferred to the 2nd half. Jordan Love and the offense got off to a great start as they marched down the field, where Love found Tucker Kraft for 15 yards and a touchdown. After the Lions punted, the Packers drove down the field and got a field goal. After Detroit answered with a FG of their own, it took only 2 plays for the Packers to reach the endzone, a bomb to Romeo Doubs and a 17-yard perfect throw to Jayden Reed for a TD. The Packers took a 17-3 lead into halftime. After Detroit kicked a FG on their opening possession of the 2nd half, the next 4 drives combined ended in punts. The Packers scored 10 points in the 4th quarter to put the game away. The Lions scored a TD with less than a minute left, but they weren’t even close to recovering the onside kick, and the Packers were able to run out the clock and celebrate a nice win.
Thoughts about this win:
The acquisition of Micah Parsons was the big story coming into this game. He certainly made an impact on defense, even though he had only 1 tackle. The Packers owned the line of scrimmage on offense and defense. That tackle Parsons had was a sack of Jared Goff late in the game.
Speaking of sacks, a crucial part of the game happened early in the 4th quarter. Goff was sacked and almost gave up a safety. The next 2 plays went nowhere and the punter had to kick from deep in his own endzone. The Packers got great field position at the Detroit 36-yard line and ended up scoring a TD on the drive. It probably would’ve been better for Detroit if they gave up a safety in that situation.
Love made some very nice throws in the game. That drive which took only 2 plays was a thing of beauty. He almost had a pass intercepted and it probably should have been, but the Lions’ player dropped it. Other than that, he looked very efficient for the most part.
With the win, the Packers have now won 13 straight home openers. Their last defeat was in 2012 to the 49ers. Under Matt LaFleur, this was their first Week 1 home game as their previous 6 home openers happened in Week 2 or later.
Yes, it’s only Week 1 and we don’t want to overreact to just 1 game, but it is nice to start the season out on a winning note. It is especially good to beat Detroit, who won the last 2 division titles. It is a new season though. The Lions can’t expect to breeze through the regular season like they did last year. I don’t expect them to flame out, but the Packers made a statement that this division title chase will not be a cakewalk.
This is an exciting win and a great start to the season, but the Packers have very little time to celebrate. Week 2 is on Thursday night, a home game vs the Washington Commanders, the team that beat Detroit and sent them home from the playoffs back in January. The Packers will also be wearing their “Winter Warning” jerseys. It should be a great one. Until then, take care Packer fans!
